DIY Donut Cake

We’ve got a serious donut and “sprinkler” obsession going on in our house right now.  Which, luckily, made it fairly easy when it came to picking a theme for Gracie’s 3rd birthday.  After scouring Pinterest, I decided that I had to at least try to make her a donut shaped cake for the night of her actual birthday.

She had requested strawberry cake, which was easy enough, but the rest made me a little nervous.   I’m not a baker — I tend to leave that to Gracie and Mom Mom.  I can bake just fine, but it’s not my passion.  So when words like fondant are being tossed around, it made hesitate oh so slightly.

In the end, I jumped in, decided to film this adventure, and I’m SO glad I did.  It came out incredibly well and I had a BLAST making it.  Maybe this will be my new thing…once a year, I’ll put on my chef’s hat and make some really cool cake for Gracie’s birthday.

The cake was enjoyed by our family after her birthday dinner and her reaction to the first cake sighting was priceless.  Don’t worry y’all, I caught it on film so go watch our very first day of Vlogmas ever. That’s another story for another day though.

The great thing about this cake was that it’s supposed to just be a donut.  Those aren’t perfect even if they may taste like it, so I wasn’t worried about smoothing out every bump or making the fondant just exactly right.  I felt free to take some artistic license in the creation of this masterpiece.  That’s right, I said it.  It’s a freaking masterpiece.
